Residents Volunteer for Birthing Kits

Aug 3, 2015 | Community News

East Ridge at Cutler Bay residents enjoy opportunities to help others and for several years The Footprints Foundation, has been a recipient of their contributions.

The organization sends Clean Birthing Kits to women living in remote villages in the Congo. These kits contain soap, biodegradable plastic bag, razor blade, cord ties, gloves, gauze squares, alcohol swabs and stockinette for baby’s head.

Several times a year East Ridge residents have “Cutting Parties” and volunteer to cut cords for ties and hats which are used in the kits. While many residents are returning volunteers, the effort brings out new participants too.

The organization’s founder, Lorna Owens, recently was on hand to offer simple instructions and talk about the organization’s mission.

Footprints Foundation is a Florida-based 501(c) (3) based in Coral Gables, Florida whose local and global mission is to reduce maternal and infant mortality and morbidity with culturally sensitive evidence based training of doctors, nurses, midwives, and traditional birth attendants.
