East Ridge at Cutler Bay is host to Coral Pines Garden Club, member of District XII of the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs, and FFGC’S six part floral design study workshops. Started in January, the workshops continue Feb. 6-7 and March 6-7.

Organized by East Ridge resident, Nancy Fehr, a Master Flower Show Judge and Master Gardener, the workshop is a series of morning lectures and demonstrations followed by afternoon hands-on workshops and critiques. Talented in their own right, accredited instructors focus on floral design for the home and for flower shows using live fresh flowers and many forms of plant materials.

Flowers have always been considered a symbol of sharing and positive feelings. Research indicates that flowers have a positive impact on emotional health which helps relieve stress, illness and depression.

Enjoyment can be found through this hobby and floral arranging and gardening have become increasingly popular.

Tremendous satisfaction can be gained from learning the basic principles of floral design and then being able to create fabulous designs for one’s home or for family and friends. To many – including myself – Floral Design is a gratifying creative art form said Nancy – encompassing creativity and beauty. There are numerous benefits found in this hobby from the satisfaction found from tapping one’s creative talents to relaxing and reducing stress and bringing joy and a smile to the face of a friend.

The finished product, a floral design, can add the finishing touch to any room, perfect for a dining room or kitchen table.

Unlike many hobbies, floral design doesn’t require expensive equipment. Flowers can be found from someone’s garden or are inexpensive at the local grocery store. Once the basic principles are learned, flowers can be arranged in an eye catching manner.

Students in the workshops choose their own containers so their designs are perfect for their home.
