Retirement can be quite satisfying as residents expand their cultural horizons and take advantage of the opportunities both within East Ridge as well as taping those available in and around Miami Dade County.
The Lifestyle Center’s staff, Virginia Duggan and Marla Gonzalez, each month works with residents in organizing outings to local concert and theatrical venues. The community’s door to door transportation services take groups to these performances. For example, in February residents headed to see “Carousel” at Actors Playhouse in Coral Gables and the Homestead Community Concert to see “Young Irelanders; “The Fairy’s Kiss” ballet at the Arsht Center.
Many residents have been long time members of various cultural organizations and tap there connections and supply enthusiastic audiences for performances. Pat Clarke’s involvement in the Coral Gables Music Club is an example. She arranges for East Ridge residents to attend free performances presented by the Coral Gables Music Club at the Coral Gables Congregational Church. It’s an opportunity to hear talented musicians who are attending the University of Miami before heading to major American music conservatories.
As an avid opera lover, when Jeff Haller moved to East Ridge he introduced a class he dubbed, “Opera Hater’s” to introduce residents to opera and help them learn to appreciate this art. This was later renamed, “Opera Converts” and they meet to discuss operas and musicals and well as attend performances. Jeff arranged group discounts for tickets. Through his friendships he has brought performances to East Ridge. The Florida Grand Opera has come to East Ridge to perform. In Feb. they graced the East Ridge stage with a shortened version Carmen, known as Carmencita.
Without leaving East Ridge there are live musical performances as well. One of the treasures residents have been enjoying is the monthly morning jam session of Dominick Cama and his friends. The local musician plays at three Three Palms Assisted Living at 10:00 on Saturday once a month. He’s joined by other jazz musicians who enjoy gathering and entertaining while honing their skills.
