Avid Readers Find East Ridge Library a Welcomed Treasure

Sep 27, 2017 | News

Library SignEast Ridge at Cutler Bay boasts a new location for the community’s extensive collection of books. The community’s library was recently located to the former location of the community’s Marketing and Sales offices which were relocated closer to East Ridge’s entry.

Open each day and staffed by volunteers, the East Ridge library offers residents both fiction and nonfiction books as well as large-type fiction books. The majority of books can be checked out for the pleasure of residents, excluding some of the library’s oversized books and first editions that are irreplaceable, explains volunteer Tag Marvel.

The new space allows separate rooms to be designated for either fiction or nonfiction books and also offers meeting space, computer workstations and an expansive back patio for outdoor reading and relaxing.

The nonfiction books are arranged by the Dewey Decimal system and include biographies, memoirs, history, hobbies and general interest while the fiction books are arranged by author.

“Devoted volunteers come each day to help in the library and stay for as long as they want, helping replace returned books to the stacks and assisting residents find books,” said Marvel.

While some of the books in the East Ridge library have come from donations, the library buys new books each month and these newest acquisitions are displayed in the front room. Each year, books are sold at either at the Christmas in July sale or the Holiday Bazaar and monies raised are contributed to the book fund.

Many of the library volunteers are also members of the East Ridge Persnickety Book Group that celebrated its 10th anniversary in February and meets monthly for book discussions. The new library’s location offers a perfect spot for their discussions.

The East Ridge library is also supplemented by the regular visits of the Miami Dade County mobile library that visits East Ridge every Monday and is able to supply multiple copies of a book the Persnickety members wish to read.

If you would like to visit East Ridge, please call 305-256-3564 and the Marketing Department will be happy to provide a tour.
