I’m often asked how living in an assisted living community can be of benefit. When I tour people through the assisted living neighborhood within the Three Palms Health Center, seeing the engagement of residents really stands out as a true benefit.
Many assisted living communities offer similar services such as three meals a day and snacks but these are required by the state in order to be a licensed assisted living facility. It’s the delivery and quality of services that differ greatly between communities.
For example, Three Palms residents have a monthly schedule of activities created by a full-time, specially trained activity director, Patricia Naraindutt. The calendar is geared to incorporate therapeutic brain-stimulating activities as well as physical things to do.
“There an inherent reason behind every activity we offer,” explained Patricia. “For example, we’ve recently installed the innovative It’s Never 2 Late (iN2L) technology, giving residents access to an extensive library of content via computer touch screens installed at the Health Center. With the touch of a screen, a whole world becomes available for our residents. The diversified content is fun and interactive while giving someone’s brain a good workout. The equipment has been readily accepted by residents who enjoy the continually changing content.”
Some families may overlook one of the most important benefits offered by an assisted living community: opportunities for social connections. Socialization is a key component of successful aging. Someone who chooses to age in place at home may find it very isolating. Even with a caregiver, there may be limited conversation. At an assisted living community, there’s always someone with whom you can talk, enjoy a meal or participate in an activity. These may seem like intangibles but research shows that loneliness can have real health consequences such as an increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease and high blood pressure.
