Celebrating National Senior Citizens Day

Aug 19, 2019 | Community News

The older the civilization, the more it comes naturally for people to honor their elders in everything they do. In the United States – a relatively young country – we must be reminded from time to time of the wealth of knowledge, experience, wisdom and compassion our elder community has to offer. To help remind the nation of this incredible debt we owe to our seniors, Wednesday, August 21, 2019 is being celebrated as National Senior Citizens Day.

On August 19, 1988, President Ronald Reagan signed Proclamation 5847, declaring August 21 as National Senior Citizens Day and it’s been celebrated yearly since then.

“At Three Palms at East Ridge at Cutler Bay, we value our senior population every single day,” said Mary Scott Russell, Director of Marketing. “There are many ways of honoring our precious seniors with love, respect and action. Actions like visiting our community at East Ridge and spending some time with your loved one … or even someone you don’t know is a wonderful investment.”

One of the greatest acts of kindness you can offer is to visit a senior living community or senior center and spend some time with an elder. It makes no difference whether or not they are family to you. A simple encounter such as talking or playing a game could make that person’s day.

Our senior citizens have made profound contributions that many of us take for granted. They have a wealth of knowledge and experience to share. National Senior Citizens Day may be the perfect opportunity to extend our appreciation, our recognition of their accomplishments and our heartfelt thanks.

If you would like to volunteer at Three Palms Health Center on National Senior Citizens Day – or any day, please call Kiyria Pedroso Jimenez, Director of Community Life at 305-256-3557 for more information.
