East Ridge Welcomes Pets

Feb 27, 2020 | Community News, Life at East Ridge

Pets are a vital part of the family, and when older adults are considering a retirement community, there’s often a concern for their beloved dog or cat and if they will be allowed to bring their furry companion.

Happily, when considering a move to East Ridge at Cutler Bay, the answer is a resounding “welcome” to your furry or feathery loved ones, according to Kiyria Jimenez, Director of Community Life. This feeling is especially strong on “Love Your Pet Day,” which takes place on February 20th.

The benefits found from the love of a cold nose on our lap are widely documented. Those with dogs and cats are known to be generally more mellow and well-adjusted, often with lowered blood pressure and reduced anxiety. Pet people tend to be more sociable.

Walking one’s dog offers a unique ability to meet and talk to your neighbors and fellow residents. For many people petting your companion will be the first thing they are motivated to do, and a friendly dialogue between residents cannot help but follow.

“It certainly helps that East Ridge has many long, meandering walking paths for exercising your pet,” says Jimenez. “But our pride and joy is the community’s Bark Park, a designated secure area where dogs can run free while residents relax and visit with other residents who either have dogs or who just enjoy congregating there. This is definitely a pet-friendly community.”

The community’s Bark Park was established thanks to the efforts of Tag and Bill Marvel in 2001, as an exercise area for their beloved Buddy, a fox terrier — a breed known for their high energy. After significant groundwork and generous matching funds from the Town Council, a vacant lot was turned into the Bark Park, a favorite meeting place for the community’s dogs, their human companions and many other residents who simply enjoy the tranquility of this garden spot. It’s considered a gem among the 76 tropical acres of meandering walking and cart paths and nature preserves found on the property.

East Ridge recognizes the importance of residents’ beloved pets and the love and companionship they bring. New residents moving to our life plan community are often relieved to hear that so long as they can care for their cherished pets, they too will be welcomed as an important part of this community.

Come visit the beautiful, peaceful, pet-friendly community that is East Ridge at Cutler Bay on Love Your Pet Day or at any other time.
